My art is my emotional response lifelong interest in the natural world around me, from my backyard garden to a wild and remote mountain range in Alaska. The beauty of a deep red rose, the awe of a cathedral-like stand of redwoods, alpenglow on snowy mountaintops as the sun sets: all these inspire and delight me.

I take these sources of inspiration and translate them to my canvases. I use the plural because I have many types of canvases. When painting, my canvas is often, literally, canvas although I do also paint on wood. When making mosaics, my canvas may be wood, special substrates for tiles, glass, concrete or darjit surfaces. The beauty of mosaics is that while they can be for inside use only, they can be designed to make wonderful, durable installations for outside use.

My translations to canvases may have a literal component, but I mess with literalness. To express my emotions, I love to mess with color. Given my delight in the natural world, my color choices tend to be bold.

I am deeply interested in place-making: making sites memorable and distinctive. My design approach, whether for a painting commission or a mosaic project, is to work with you to create a design that reflects both the technical opportunities of the medium and of the site with the your desired goals.
